Heavy duty zippers and material. Well padded in the shoulder straps, and has extra straps for added support when the backpack is full/heavy. It would have been 5 stars but I found that the distance between the shoulder straps (where it sits at my neck) was very narrow, and was a source of irritation and slight friction as it rubbed on the sides and back of my neck. If I wear it with a heavy coat or sweater, it's more tolerable, but if I wear just a t-shirt, it is annoying, especially over long distances.

The design is definitely plain and tactical-looking, but if you're like me and want something more exciting, it's easy enough to add patches, buttons, pins, stickers, etc. to that black surface.
