The ABC's Of Preparedness

The ABC's Of Preparedness

The light bulb comes on. You know that you are not as prepared as you need to be for a blackout or other emergency situation. What do you do to get ready? How do you start this journey? The ABC's of Preparedness is a mindset. It comprises a simple set of ideas you can use to help answer these questions for yourself.

Assess your needs and Acquire resources
1. Food
2. Clothing
3. Shelter
4. Medical
5. Money
6. Mobility
7. Communications

While all 7 areas listed above are essential, we highly recommend focusing a considerable amount of time securing supplies to meet your basic medical needs. This appears to be a very neglected area of preparation. Start with getting a basic First Aid Kit. This includes taking a First Aid and CPR Course and keeping some medical books in an electronic format that you can take with you.

Build Your Bug Out Bag, Identify A Secondary Location and Establish You Survival Network
1. You should customize your Bug Out Bag to fit a 72-Hour and 168-Hour survival scenario.
2. Remember, your Bug Out Bag is to rapidly evacuate to your secondary location. Keep it light and stealthy.
3. You must identify a viable secondary location you can get to in a reasonable amount of time. Think about a worst case scenario where you would have to walk to the location with yourself and family.
4. You must build up a survival network of contacts. No one is an island to themself. Think about your long term survival needs and wants when considering who to include in this vital network.
5. You must make a habit of maintaining the relationships in your survival network. If you build a network but don't keep in regular contact it will not work as effectively for you when the "S-H-T" hits the fan.

Change Course and Quickly Adapt to New Survival Realities
1. A preppers best defense is an even better offense. This requires thinking deeply about what I call Factor X scenarios and then being flexible enough to adjust to them should any of the Factor X scenarios happen.
2. Always review and revise your plans based on gaining new information. This is common sense but there is a tendency to get complacent once you have made big investments in the survival lifestyle.
3. It is possible to become so rigid that you reach a point of being flat footed when things go differently than you anticipated. Experience tells us that is exactly what will happen.

Use the ABC's of Preparedness to increase your odds of surviving blackout or other emergency situations. Remember the most important thing you can do is Take Action Now!
